Any of the microscopic openings or pores in the epidermis of leaves and young stems. They are generally more numerous on the undersides of leaves. They provide for the exchange of gases between the outside air and the interconnecting air canals within the leaf. A stoma opens and closes in response to turgor pressure within its two surrounding guard cells. Because the inner wall of each of these sausage- or bean-shaped cells is thicker than the outer wall, when they fill with water and become turgid they balloon outward, enlarging the stoma. A drop in carbon-dioxide levels to lower than normal also causes the guard cells to become turgid. Guard cells control excessive water loss from the plant, closing on hot, dry, or windy days and opening when conditions are more favorable.

In botany, a %26quot;stoma%26quot; (also stomate; plural stomata) is a tiny opening or pore, found mostly on the underside of a plant leaf, and used for gas exchange. The pore is formed by a pair of specialized sclerenchyma cells known as guard cells which are responsible for regulating the size of the opening. Air containing carbon dioxide enters the plant through these openings where it gets used in photosynthesis and respiration. Oxygen produced by photosynthesis in the parenchyma cells (parenchyma cells with pectin) of the leaf interior exits through these same openings. Also, water vapor is released into the atmosphere through these pores in a process called transpiration.

Dicotyledons usually have more stomata on the lower epidermis than the upper epidermis. As these leaves are held horizontally, upper epidermis is directly illuminated. Locating fewer stomata on the upper epidermis can then prevent excess water loss.

Monocotyledons are different. Because their leaves are held vertically, they will have the same number of stomata on the two epidermes.

If the plant has floating leaves, there will be no stomata on the lower epidermis and they absorb gases directly from water through the cuticle. If it is a submerged leaf, no stomata will be present on either side.

Stoma in Greek (蟽蟿蠈渭伪) means %26quot;mouth%26quot;.

Carbon gain and water loss

Stoma of a leaf under a microscopeAs the key reactant in photosynthesis, carbon dioxide, is found in the atmosphere. Most plants require the stomata to be open during daytime. The problem is that the air spaces in the leaf are saturated with water vapor, which exits the leaf through the stomata (this is known as transpiration). Therefore, plants cannot gain carbon dioxide without simultaneously losing water vapor.

Alternative approaches

Ordinarily, carbon dioxide is fixed to ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate (RuBP) by the enzyme Rubisco in mesophyll cells exposed directly to the air spaces inside the leaf. This exacerbates the carbon/water tradeoff for two reasons: first, Rubisco has a relatively low affinity for carbon dioxide and second, it fixes oxygen to RuBP, wasting energy and carbon in a process called photorespiration. For both of these reasons, Rubisco needs high carbon dioxide concentrations, which means high stomatal apertures and consequently high water loss.

However, plants possess another enzyme that can also fix carbon dioxide: PEP carboxylase or PEPCase. This enzyme has high carbon dioxide affinity, so a given rate of carbon dioxide fixation can be achieved with less stomatal opening, and hence less water loss. The catch is that the products of carbon fixation by PEPCase must be converted in an energy-intensive process to continue through the carbon reactions of photosynthesis. As a result, the PEPCase alternative is only preferable where water is more limiting but light -- which provides the energy in this case -- is plentiful, and/or where high temperatures increase the solubility of oxygen relative to that of carbon dioxide, magnifying Rubisco%26#039;s oxygenation problem.

CAM plants

A group of mostly desert plants called %26quot;CAM%26quot; plants (Crassulacean acid metabolism, after the family Crassulaceae, which includes the species in which the CAM process was first discovered) open their stomata at night (when water evaporates more slowly from leaves for a given degree of stomatal opening), use PEPcarboxylase to fix carbon dioxide and store the products in large vacuoles. The following day, they close their stomata and release the carbon dioxide fixed the previous night into the presence of Rubisco. This saturates Rubisco with carbon dioxide, allowing minimal photorespiration. This approach, however, is severely limited by the capacity to store fixed carbon in the vacuoles, so it is preferable only when water is severely limiting.

Opening and closure

Confocal image of an Arabidopsis thaliana stoma showing two guard cells exhibiting green fluorescent protein and native chloroplast (red) fluorescenceHowever, most plants do not have the above-said facility and must therefore open and close their stomata during the daytime in response to changing conditions, such as light intensity, humidity, and carbon dioxide concentration. It is not entirely certain how these responses work. However, the basic mechanism involves regulation of osmotic pressure.

When conditions are conducive to stomatal opening (e.g., high light intensity and high humidity), a proton pump drives protons (H+) from the guard cells. This means that the cells%26#039; electrical potential becomes increasingly negative, and so an uptake of potassium ions (K+) occurs. This in turn increases the osmotic pressure inside the cell, drawing in water through osmosis. This increases the cell%26#039;s volume and turgor pressure. Then, because the wall of the guard cell facing the stomatal pore is less elastic (more rigid) than the wall on the opposite side of the cell, the two guard cells bow apart from one another, creating an open pore through which gas can move.

When the roots begin to sense a water shortage in the soil, abscisic acid (ABA) is released[1]. ABA binds to certain receptors in the guard cells%26#039; plasma membranes, which first raises the pH of the cytosol of the cells and cause the concentration of free Ca2+ to increase in the cytosol due to influx from outside the cell and release of Ca2+ from internal stores such as the endoplasmic reticulum and vacuoles[2]. This causes the chloride (Cl-) and inorganic ions to exit the cells. Secondly, this stops the uptake of any further K+ into the cells and subsequentally the loss of K+. The loss of these solutes causes a reduction in osmotic pressure, thus making the cell flaccid and so closing the stomatal pores. When the stoma become flaccid some water is lost to the environment. This loss of water is called transpiration and is essential in the water cycle.

Interestingly, the guard cells do have chloroplasts whereas other epidermal cells (from which guard cells are derived) do not. Their function is controversial.[3][4]

Inferring stomatal behavior from gas exchange

Another way to find out whether stomata are open or closed, or more accurately, how open they are, is by measuring leaf gas exchange. A leaf is enclosed in a sealed chamber and air is driven through the chamber. By measuring the concentrations of carbon dioxide and water vapor in the air before and after it flows through the chamber, one can calculate the rate of carbon gain (photosynthesis) and water loss (transpiration) by the leaf.

However, because water loss occurs by diffusion, the transpiration rate depends on two things: the gradient in humidity from the leaf%26#039;s internal air spaces to the outside air, and the diffusion resistance provided by the stomatal pores. Stomatal resistance (or its inverse, stomatal conductance) can therefore be calculated from the transpiration rate and humidity gradient. (The humidity gradient is the humidity inside the leaf, determined from leaf temperature based on the assumption that the leaf%26#039;s air spaces are saturated with vapor, minus the humidity of the ambient air, which is measured directly.) This allows scientists to learn how stomata respond to changes in environmental conditions, such as light intensity, humidity, or carbon dioxide concentration.

Also make sure that you moisturize your face afterwards (some kind of non-greasy formula) so that it doesn%26#039;t get dried out. The alcohol kills bacteria which cause pimples and helps clean out your pores. I found this out recently and I only wish I%26#039;d known it a few years ago when my acne was at its worst.|||Do you use a moisturiser after you cleanse and do you use a non abrrasive facial exfoliant twice a week?

If not then this may be why. You need to double cleanse (cleanse twice) then remove the cleanser with luke warm water and clean facial sponges or face washer, apply a lotion ( a non alcoholic toner) and then apply a day cream to your skin.

If you squeeze your comedones (blackheads) you should be covering your finger tips with tissues so that you do not put bacteria onto your skin. If nothing comes out DO NOT continue squeezing as it is not ready and you will burst capillaries in your skin.

For best results you can purchase a mud mask or a mask which dries solid- these act as drawing agents and will draw the bacteria, commedones etc out of your skin but your skin will feel tight afterwards so apply your lotion and moisturiser immediately after removing the mask.

If you do this routine twice a day and use an exfoliant twice a week and a mask once a week you will begin to see clear follicles in about 1-2 weeks.

To prevent further breakouts, comedomes etc try not to touch your face and skin as this spreads oil and bacteria and will clogg pores.

I hope I have helped you, sorry for such a long answer|||Oh yeah that%26#039;s a delicious blackhead description. :)

It depends on the facewash, but there are two main things that help in the process besides the obvious, soap.

First is exfoliation. It gets rid of dead skin that clogs pores and loosens the deep down dirt and oil that turns into blackheads. And second is medication. It treats the exsisting problem with special scientist formulated magical ways. ;)

But nothing is going to help if you don%26#039;t wash your face morning AND night. No matter what face wash you use, it makes a major improvement. (I use clean%26amp;clear too but it doesn%26#039;t work instantly! Don%26#039;t run out of patience, keep up your routine and you%26#039;ll start to see results.)

Good luck!

Products minimising pores for under foundation?

Does anybody know a good product that helps me here:

I have some areas in my face with larger pores. When I put on any foundation (I tried many) the appearance of the large pores does not get better, sometimes rather worse.

What can i use at home to shrink pores?

I have been playing around with homemade remedies for a while and there are a couple really good things you can do.

Mix baking soda with a little water, to form a loose paste. Use this as an exfoliant, rub over your face with mild pressure (like microdermabrasion) and then let dry for a few minutes. Rinse with warm water and pat dry. I love it!

Another really good pore cleaner is 1 teaspoon unflavored gelitan and 1 1/2 teaspoon milk, mix and then microwave for 10 seconds.

Stir and thickly put over the areas where your pores need cleaning, but quickly. (after you let it cool for about 1 minute). Don%26#039;t move your face, so that it doesn%26#039;t crack or dry loose.

Let dry, approx 15 minutes and then just peel off like Biore%26#039; strips! Works really good!

Ok, last but not least! Crack an egg and seperate the white, throw yolk away.

Mix the white with an egg beater to break it down. Then on a clean face, put the egg white wash all over. You%26#039;ll use about 1/2 of it.

Really get it thick on your skin.

Let dry, about 15 minutes, try to remain expressionless so you don%26#039;t crack the mask. Remove with warm wet cloth, you will be amazed how good it makes your skin look!

It%26#039;s almost a mini facelift!

Good Luck!|||you can%26#039;t shrink your pores-unless you have actually have large clogged pores from oil and dirt buildup like blackheads and is done extracting them out thus making them appear smaller after .At facials, they steam up your face and then does the extraction. How to help get rid of big pores on my face?

As a person who also has large pores I can tell you the only thing you can do is clean your face at least twice a day . I have very oily skin which means my pores are always dirty. I find that using a deep cleaning cleanser ( I use Clean and Clear - the Foaming Facial Cleanser and the Deep Cleaning Astringent) really get into the pores and clean my face. I also try to use oil-free products so as not to add to oiliness of my skin. If you have sensitive skin like myself, you may have to try a couple of brands first before you find the right one. I break out when I change my cleansers so that is something you%26#039;ll have to watch out for and give yourself at least a month with any given product to see if it actually works (stating the obvious but if you get itchy red bumps or anything out of the ordinary that isn%26#039;t a pimple I suggest discontinuing use of the product since that it%26#039;s a normal reaction of your face to the product)

I hope this helps and good luck.

If you find anything else that works please let me know :)|||This safe, natural cure is a really effective way to quickly reduce large pores and permanently rid face of pimples, black and white heads

Quite vigorous massage using natural unadulterated oils works wonders. Lavender, sweet almond and grape seed have been used by specialists to treat and cure acne as they do not clog, and they actually reduce skin%26#039;s oil production. Extra virgin olive oil also works well on many skins.

So as not to pull/stretch skin, first tighten by opening mouth 3/4%26quot; and pull lips firrmly back against teeth. Do a forward and back massage - not circular - using tips and front of fingers and sometimes palms - depending where on face you apply. For quickest results do for 15 to 20 min daily (Doesn%26#039;t have to be all in one session). Skin will clear and pores will reduce in as little as 2 to 3 days and see better results day by day.

Apply to entire face to get a tight, firm, totally blemish free, healthy skin. Oils are perfect safe moisturizers - many moisturizing products harm and age skin. Simply wipe away surface excess with water and tissues. Does not leave face oily looking.

鈥HE INFO鈥橲 BASED ON MY OWN EXPERIENCE. I鈥橫 36 NOW SO I鈥橵E HAD TO DEAL WITH THESE ISSUES FOR QUITE A WHILE AND THOUGH MUCH OF THIS ANSWER MAY BE IRRELEVANT, I HOPE THERE%26#039;LL BE SOMETHING THAT CAN HELP YOU!

GOOD LUCK!!!

RECOMMENDED SKIN CARE鈥 use clean and clear cream wash (good for sensitive skin or those that dry to easy) or Neutrogena clear skin make up remover wash. Both contain salicylic acid which prevents breakouts and gradually evens the skin tone out too. This is the most important thing you can do. I鈥檝e tried various 鈥榦il free鈥?鈥檚alicylic acid鈥?moisturisers but the best I鈥檝e found is the clean and clear on鈥 found the Neutrogena one actually seemed to aggravate my skin.

EMERGENCY SPOT TREATMENT!...The toothpaste things works! Put on a blob at night and put a bit of tissue over it so it doesn%26#039;t make a mess. It cools the area down and reduces the inflammation. I also recommend the clean and clear advantage spot treatment gel.

HORMONAL SPOTS鈥ny female with spots I%26#039;d recommend trying dianette or yasmine contraceptive pills because if it%26#039;s hormonal that can sort everything out within weeks鈥hough it can take a couple of months to get used to the pill.

FACIAL ACNE: AVOID鈥on%26#039;t use harsh scrubs and peroxide products daily like some people do; that can dry your skin and make produce MORE oil...just exacerbating the problem. Many face packs I鈥檝e tried and those blackhead removal strips too seem to have caused problems.

I鈥檝e also had problems with those 鈥榝acial wipes鈥?made by clean and clear and Neutrogena because they鈥檙e too drying and when the top layer鈥檚 too dry, the oil gets stuck underneath and causes more problems!

Some say chocolate doesn鈥檛 affect it鈥t does for me and I don鈥檛 know how or why that should be but certain foods do seem to affect break out. Coffee is one of those things that seems to aggravate my skin too. So look out for anything you eat that might be making it worse.

HAIR PRODUCTS鈥e careful what products you use in your hair if it%26#039;s long - certain conditioners have causes me to break out at times. Also be careful of hair gels, hair sprays and serums.

INGROWING HAIRS鈥or men or women鈥f you have oily skin, these are more likely. For men鈥se a facial scrub and avoid moisturisers that don鈥檛 have salicylic acid in them if you use a moisturiser. Some hair conditioners are much better lubricants than shaving cream too 鈥?so you might want to try that, and then was afterwards with a clean and clear was etc. Also I recommend the microdermabrasion kit mentioned later.

For women鈥axing seems to cause the main problem 鈥?we pay most attention to our faces. Waxing seems to be the main culprit as opposed to shaving or hair removal creams鈥o avoid in-growing hairs, make sure to exfoliate. I recommend using those exfoliating gloves 鈥?that way, you can use any kind of shower gel.

NUTRITION鈥 recommend taking a 100% multi vitamin/mineral complex 鈥?those little spots you get around your mouth can be due to a vitamin b deficiency for example. Also I recommend Omega 369 oils every day because they improve blood flow.

OLD WIVES TALE??...It%26#039;s an %26#039;old wives tale%26#039; type remedy - but a spoonful of cider vinegar and honey in hot water 3 times a day is meant to help EVERYTHING. It tastes nice too...kinda like honey and lemon X

HYDRATION鈥?Keep your hydration right by drinking plenty of water, avoiding caffeine and alcohol and too much salt!

DEALING WITH SCARRING鈥here鈥檚 an excellent micro-dermabrasion scrub called 鈥榬e-finish鈥? by L%26#039;oreal. You only use it a couple of times a week (and use at night because it makes your face red!). It really works not just with the colouring but also the texture - smoothes it back out. It comes with it%26#039;s own moisturiser which I don%26#039;t use but I use the scrub at night a couple of times a week and put bio oil on which it supposed to help clear scarring and even skin tone.

If you get your skin relatively under control, try using %26#039;21 days Fade Cream%26#039; (which I get from eBay) because it quickly clears up any scarring. It鈥檚 a skin lightening cream and is very effective as long as your skin type agrees with it. Bio oil is a good alternative!

Also, to detract from the colour variations in your skin tone, I recommend using Benefit鈥檚 Posie Tint or Benetint lipstain 鈥?this can be put on your cheeks and lips (which also makes your teeth look whiter as an added bonus). Lipstain is better than lipstick because it doesn鈥檛 smudge and it stays on; you can put lip balm or lip gloss on over it. Also, if you use it (SPARINGLY) on your cheeks, it is just like putting water on there; it doesn鈥檛 aggravate the skin or cause breakouts.

They have been used by specialists to treat/cure acne as they lessen skin%26#039;s production of oil, they do not clog or cause breakouts (See USER%26#039;S happy response below ***).

First tighten skin by opening mouth 3/4%26quot; and pulling lips firmly back against teeth. Use finger tips and front of fingers and sometimes palms depending where on face you massage. Do forward and back massage - a circular motion will not work. Do over and over firmly and quite vigorously. For quickest results do each day for 15 to 30 min.(Doesn%26#039;t have to be all in one session).

Pores will greatly minimize in as little as 2 to 3 days. If massage entire face you will quickly have a smooth, radiant, tight, totally blemish free, healthy skin and you will not need to use any other product or treatment ever again - not even moisturizers. But you can make them appear smaller. They are caused by dead skin cells and oil stretching the pore. Here are some things you can try:

Eliminate fried food.

Use oil-free products if you use anything for your face.

Wash your face with a cleanser that says %26quot;pore-refining%26quot;.|||this works for me

just brush an ice cube around your large pore area until it melts every morning and night until they shrink.

Heat creates an atmosphere for your pores to expand. A hot rag (as hot as you can stand it) across the face is the best bet. As far as a topical treatment, you need to invest in a good scrub and a very fine toner. I tell people this all the time that I do makeup for. Here are some key things to remember when looking for cleansers:

1. A good scrub needs to have some sort of exfoliant (i.e. microbeads, pumice grains, etc.) in it. Once you have applied the hot rag to your face and opened up your pores, the scrub is used to get deep down into the pores and clean them out.

2. In a good scrub, stay away from anything that has a lot of soap or fragrance to it. Fragrance = additives that probably will makes things worse. Your main ingredient when looking for a scrub is salicylic acid. Salicylic acid acts as an antibacterial to cleanse deep to break up the blackheads and fight the bacteria causing them.

3. A good toner should be found because once the skin is clean, the toner is used to tighten the cleansed pores to minimalize the entrance of future bacteria. And sadly to say it (but get over it), A TONER DOES STINK! Its made primarily of alcohol, so it will stink! Get over it! It%26#039;s worth it!

4. Lastly, and a lot of people don%26#039;t think about this, find a light lotion with an added sunscreen (at least SPF 15). You want a light lotion (nothing fancy or fragrancy) with a sunscreen to prevent dryness from the toner and the sunscreen willhelp protect from sun damage (obviously!).

Always remember to catch blackheads before they start (before they become pimples)! And for the love of God: DO NOT PICK AT A PIMPLE IF YOU GET ONE! picking only creates more infection from the bacteria on your hands....and most importantly: it%26#039;s just GROSS! Some brands to try for a scurb or toner would be: Oil of Olay, Biore`, Clinique, Clean %26amp; Clear, Clearasil.......just to name a few! Oh and p.s. to guys: just because girls use it in a commercial DOES NOT mean that a guy cannot use it too! A girl would like it a lot more to see a guy with a clean face and a cabinet full of girly skin care stuff, than Mister Zit next door! I%26#039;m gay....trust me on this!

Anyone out there had chemical peels on face for acne scarring or pores?

Any experiences helpful. I%26#039;m considering one when i can get up the money for it. I have mostly some enlarged pores, with very light wrinkles starting around eyes and mouth. I%26#039;m mid thirties|||I had a series of mild chemical peels (fruit acid base, but I forget the name). I LOVED the results. I had stopped taking birthcontrol and my skin went crazy and nothing, not even proactive helped. When the acne got bad enough that i started noticing scars i tried a chemical peel under the care of a Dermatologist. I had peels every 6 - 8 weeks for about a year and have had perfect skin since. The chemical was only on my skin for 5 minutes, removed, followed by an icewater mask to soothe. I noticed results after the first session. Like i said, i had a mild peel, so afterwards only thing i had to make sure to do was wear an SPF moisterizer, which i do anyway. No recovery time.|||A girl I lived with did it.

It was pretty insane to look at... but seemed to make her look better the weeks after the %26quot;leper look%26quot; was over.

Then she got the smart idea of doing it herself because if you looked at her just right from like 2%26quot; away you could still see an indention. Without going into detail she screwed up. Not advised.

I also like to use a mask after I clean my face to pull out oil %26amp; dirt that is still in my pores and then I use those biore nose strips to literally pull whatever%26#039;s left out of there. After I wash the mask off I wipe my face down with an oil controlling astringent then put some kind of pore minimizing treatment only where my pores are large. But, with many, this simplistic answer may not be the appropriate course of action. Some feel that such prescription drugs just treat the symposium and not the underlying cause. But, a local dermatologist is still your best starting point.

For me personally, I discovered a great informational acne treatment site. Not only is there good information/articles but I got their audio e-book and following it鈥檚 advice can now say that my acne is a thing of the past! Keep in mind, were all different and there are various types of acne, so what works for some may not be totally effective for all.

Three basics to skin care done once in morning and once at night: 1. Cleanse- get a facial cleanser for oily skin ( never, ever use seabreeze or any other astringent as they are bad for your skin) 2. Tone- also get a toner for oily skin (this balances the ph of your skin) 3. Moisturize- buy a facial moisturizer for oily skin ( remember moisture is different than oil, so it is important to keep your skin moisturized). I am a licensed skin care professional and hope this helps you some. Depending on the degree of your acne you might want to seek help from an esthetician or a dermatologist.|||Okay, Number 1- if you have a healthy diet that really helps. Number 2- be sure and clean your face after any athletic activity. Number 3- clean your face with a astringent that clears out the pores in the morning and at night.
